Production Engineering - Senior Rails Developer

Shopify is the world’s fastest growing commerce platform, supporting over 800,000 merchants globally, with no plans to slow down. We’re on a mission to scale our platform while simultaneously improving performance, reliability, and resiliency. To do this, we need the help of dedicated, methodical, and versatile developers.

We’re looking for senior Ruby on Rails backend and full-stack developers with a passion for solving tough problems with performant code.  We ship on quality instead of on time. Our teams deploy new code many times a day, and our production scale is massive. We’re talking hundreds of thousands of online stores, and hundreds of millions of requests a day.

We are growing, so there are plenty of opportunities to learn and advance in a variety of teams. You’ll have the creative freedom to make a real difference, the support to bring your whole self to work, and the chance to work with the best in the business.

Projects you could work on:

Cloud Portal: Shopify applications are 100% running in the cloud on some of the largest kubernetes clusters in the world. Our in-house built Cloud Portal is what enables development teams to manage their applications in production. A developer centric tool with built on the same stack as all of our merchant-facing applications. Visualize running services, quickly determining application health, configuration and tuning, debugging, and real-time monitoring.

Services DB: With hundreds of applications running on Shopify’s production platform, maintaining quality standards across the company is an important priority. With a tool originally conceived by our very own CTO, we are able to track applications as they evolve and help teams achieve quality standards through the use of service level objectives, quality checks, metrics, trends, and more.

Kubernetes Cluster Tooling: From deploying to production many times a day, to provisioning new cluster services for applications, we rely on various cluster tools and automation to help us achieve our self-service platform as a product vision. Many of these tools have been open-sourced as we’re big supporters of the engineering community!

    • Experience with Typescript and SPA frameworks like React

    • A commitment and drive for quality, excellence and results

    • A passion for helping development teams grow and making others better

We know that applying to a new role takes a lot of work and we truly value your time. We are looking forward to reading your application. Please take some time to tell us why you’d be an awesome addition to our team and how this role would be a fit for you!
