ROLE DESCRIPTION



A vacancy has opened for a tooling and automation engineer in either the UK or US region of the global IFS Cloud Operations team. This role will take the lead in designing, developing, deploying and maintaining new and existing tooling/automation solutions to enable IFS to further drive the reliability and efficiency of its Cloud Operations platform. The platform, which runs on Microsoft Azure supports an ever-growing range of products to satisfy the ERP, EAM, FSM and other technical needs of businesses small and large around the world.



Although not a role with people management duties, the selected individual will provide technical leadership to a tooling team located in our Sri Lankan operations centre and will work extensively with their peers in the US/UK and Sweden on tooling and automation topics.



The role offers flexible working opportunities. It is primarily an office hours-based role, though it does form part of a mandatory 24x7 on call rota with other senior technical resources in the organisation.



EXPECTATIONS AND TASKS




  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert for all automation tooling items and additionally any other shared tooling within the Cloud Operations remit


  • Independently gather information from the relevant process owners to design, develop and deploy the maximum possible automation abilities for all possible processes within the Cloud Operations organisation.


  • Make informed decisions based on current practices and processes to choose the most appropriate tools and methods to automate tasks for maximum impact and long-term benefit.


  • Work with the various product development teams to collaboratively address new tooling needs as they arise and maintain existing tooling solutions


  • Work with the documentation team to ensure suitable documentation is produced for all automation tasks, including where relevant process guides, SOPs and architecture diagrams.


  • Work with the cloud solution architects and with product development architects to drive their future usage of automation in a direction consistent with the cloud operations approach to ensure future product updates work well with our automation strategy and tooling choices


  • Manage updates and revisions to existing automations as needed


  • Provide training, support and guidance to the Cloud Service Centre operations teams in using and maintaining the deployed automations and to gather future use cases and enhancements that are exposed through their daily usage of the provided automated functions


  • Identify opportunities for new or enhanced automations to drive efficiencies within the cloud operations team, producing designs and plans to address those opportunities.


  • At busy times for the team, the technical skills the tooling team have may be used to support the SRE team in handling operational service desk escalations if needed


  • The above are the core duties of the role, there are many other duties all along similar lines



WORK EXPERIENCE




  • Minimum of 5 years working in a production cloud or large enterprise IT environment supporting the required technologies.


  • Role would suit an experience system administrator with a background in scripting or similar roles.



EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES



Technical Skills




  • System administration skills in the following operations systems:


    • Linux (Ubuntu preferably but any enterprise distribution will be considered)


    • Windows Server (2016 preferred but other versions will be considered)




  • Operational experience in supporting three or more of the following middleware products:


    • Weblogic Server or Microsoft IIS web server


    • Oracle Database or Microsoft SQL server


    • Nginx web server or Apache/OHS web server


    • Docker


    • Kubernetes




  • Scripting experience in two or more of the following languages


    • Terraform


    • Powershell


    • Bash


    • Ansible




  • Exposure to one or more of the following data description languages:


    • JSON


    • YAML




  • Exposure to one or more of the following CI/CD tool sets


    • Jenkins


    • Gitlab


    • Azure pipelines




  • Operational Experience of the Azure cloud platform

  • Ability to work alone on focused projects

  • Proactivity in all aspects of the technical and team role


  • Ability to convey ideas and designs to technical and non-technical audiences

Qualifications




  • A formal qualification (degree, HND, etc.) in Computer Science/Information Technology would be useful though not mandatory.


  • ITIL qualifications, at foundation or higher levels, would be useful but are not mandatory.


  • Microsoft Azure or Window Server MCP certifications would be useful but are not mandatory
