About the role

This is a senior leadership role supporting Kraken subsidiaries across the globe, reporting to the Global Head of Compliance. You will be part of our rapidly growing compliance team comprised of talented and motivated individuals from a variety of backgrounds, leading your own team of experienced compliance professionals responsible for critical compliance initiatives globally. You will be required to leverage your experience and expertise while at the same time challenging the norms and stale practices of the incumbent industry participants to identify ways to make Compliance at Kraken a competitive advantage over our competitors.  This is an opportunity not only to ensure that Kraken is successful in a truly dynamic industry, but also to redefine how compliance should be done.  The successful candidate will be able to navigate the regulatory uncertainty and changing policy positions of global regulators and governments while partnering with executive leadership to help chart a path that ensures Kraken delivers on corporate priorities while reinforcing our culture of compliance.


    • Provide executive level leadership and problem solving skills to help Kraken navigate complex global challenges in a highly fluid regulatory environment

    • Partner with executive leadership across the entire organization to identify opportunities to support and deliver on corporate objectives

    • Engage with Corporate Development, Regional Operations, and Strategy teams to assess risks, and opportunities, while constantly driving to actionable and achievable strategic plans

    • Consistently challenge the status quo in order to identify opportunities to enhance our current processes, procedures, and thought processes to better serve our customers and protect the company

    • Develop/enhance our corporate governance practices across our global subsidiaries to ensure consistent Board level oversight of Compliance risks

    • Support our global Compliance Officers and Managing Directors by providing expert advice, guidance, and resources wherever possible to ensure delivery and execution of local priorities

    • Mentor, develop, and provide leadership to a small but growing team of senior Compliance professionals across multiple disciplines including (but not limited to): Strategic Initiatives, Testing, Training, Data Privacy and Program teams

    • Develop a Compliance Risk Management Program to cover the current and contemplated products, services, and subsidiaries working with Compliance Officers and executives globally

    • Enhance our exam and audit management program to ensure consistency in communication with all stakeholders globally, including external third parties, consistent delivery of responsive documentation, and tracking/reporting of identified findings and remediation efforts

    • Clearly and timely communicate findings, determinations and recommendations to management and stakeholders, both at periodic intervals and as needed regarding escalated or high-risk compliance issues, in order to accomplish compliance goals

    • Deep understanding of compliance testing as this role will lead the team in designing and implementing the testing program

    • Lead core documentation on compliance efforts, and ensure proper record-keeping associated with each program

    • Overseeing the drafting and ongoing maintenance of robust policies and procedures.

    • Lead the team that handles licensing and registration projects (globally)


    • Fluency in English required, additional languages a plus

    • Prior experience as a Chief Compliance Officer, BSA Officer, MLRO, or similar role with direct reporting lines to the Board of Directors preferred

    • J.D., L.L.M., M.B.A. or other advanced degree is preferred

    • Professional industry certifications such as Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS), a plus

    • Significant experience in a previous regulatory or compliance managerial position at a banking, trading, payments, or fintech institution, hyper-growth fintech a plus

    • Additionally experience directing KYC and AML compliance programs in a financial services firm and having a solid grasp of the BSA and other laws and regulations applicable to a regulated financial institution

    • Skilled in collaborating with stakeholders at all levels across technical and non-technical groups

    • Executive level presentation abilities, both verbally and using various media

    • Ability to lead in a growing company environment with focused and hardworking individuals

    • Exceptional attention to detail and strong problem-solving skills

    • Excellent written and oral communication skills

    • Experience and/or passion for crypto preferred
